The Red Lion is situated on Main Road, Brereton (A51) within a designated Conservation Area. Probably the oldest pub in Brereton- a 'Red Lyon' was recorded in 1595 as being owned by Richard Weston of Hagley Hall. In 1686, Robert Plot wrote of an implement he saw there for uprooting bushes and gorse. Owners of the Inn are recorded from 1769. In 1842, it was bought from Mrs Mary Birch, with 16 acres, by the Second Earl Talbot for £2,134. Delivery records from his brickworks suggest it was or extended five years later, possibly incorporating parts of the earlier building. It was sold in 1923 by his descendants and it was tenanted by Buntings Uttoxeter brewery. The Inns attractive two-storey long frontage, featuring a central gable, provides a an appealing focal point to travellers entering the Brereton & Ravenhill Parish from the South. An 1880's watercolour shows the rendered frontage and upper windows to be much as they are at present. |
